Storytime was extra special at Marlboro Elementary School on April 1, when students had the opportunity to meet Chris Grabenstein, the acclaimed author behind the Mr. Lemoncello’s Library series. Grabenstein’s visit was the exciting finale of the school’s “One School, One Book” initiative, which encouraged students and families to engage in a shared reading experience throughout March, coinciding with Read Across America Month.
At the beginning of the month, each student in Grades K-5 received a copy of Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library, the first book in Grabenstein’s beloved series. Families were also provided with a reading calendar that outlined page goals to keep everyone on track. To build excitement, the school organized a themed spirit week featuring such activities as “Bring Your Favorite Stuffy to School to Read With” and “Dress Up Like Your Favorite Book Character.” The initiative also brought the school community together for a well-attended Family Night at the Marlboro Free Library, where students and their families participated in a scavenger hunt and a creative craft activity inspired by the book.
Principal Jena Thomas remarked that the ‘“One School, One Book” initiative was a wonderful way to bring the school community together through the love of reading.
“It was incredible to see students, teachers, and families so engaged, not just with the book itself, but with all of the fun activities that made the experience even more meaningful,” she said, adding that Grabenstein’s visit was the perfect way to wrap up the school’s month-long reading journey.
During his lively presentation, the author shared his path to becoming a published writer and emphasized the importance of perseverance, reminding students of the valuable lesson, “Fall down seven times, get up eight.” He also invited students to participate in interactive improv storytelling, sparking plenty of laughter and creativity.
We’d like to thank Grabenstein for his inspiring visit, and to express our pride in the entire school community for making “One School, One Book” such a memorable and enjoyable experience!
